REVIEW: R. Finn’s “Collecting Trip”
R. Finn’s new release Collecting Trip (Heritage Recording Co) features a host of heavy hitting Americana musicians backing R. Finn’s elegant, sincere songwriting and flawless musical consciousness. R. Finn worked with Levon Helm, living with him at his home in Woodstock, engineering the Midnight Ramble sessions for several years. He then returned to Los Angeles to found his own studio; the Heritage Recording Company, surrounded himself with all things musically impeccable, and turned to recording his debut album.
When the John & Ruby Lomax famously set out in 1939 to collect recordings of the wide range of existing southern Americana music, the resulting compilation established a historic foundation for American folk music, with their son Alan later continuing the tradition. A homage to these early recordings, Collecting Trip is a reconnection to the roots of songwriting, and R. Finn’s songs are beautiful examples of the simple, essential core that makes a song resonate within our very soul
A truly great drummer is immediately distinguishable and one listen to these songs reveals that truth. Jim Keltner backs R.Finn on drums on this project. Keltner has played with all of the Beatles except Paul McCartney; and with Eric Clapton, Tom Petty, Lucinda Williams, Jerry Garcia and numerous other greats. The value of the precise and appropriately uncluttered drumming style cannot be underestimated.

Ghettoblaster premieres diNMachine’s “Sound Pets” video
Synth-driven noise/pop outfit, diNMachine—a project led by experimental composer, Michael J. Schumacher — is gearing up for the release of their new LP, The Pleasure of Principles, on February 9. The record is a chaotic and noisy mélange of analog synthesizers clang together in a melodic cacophony incorporating warped rushes and metallic tones. The dark, hypnotic music of diNMachine is comprised of experimental soundscapes that work together with drum and bass grooves to elicit harmony from a complex palette of skittering electronic sequences. Dismantling any prior notions of “pop” music, Schumacher—a Juilliard-trained composer—draws on a range of influences including Aphex Twin, Luke Vibert, Brian Eno and Stereolab. READ MORE…

PopDust unveils the new single from Abhi The Nomad
Abhi the Nomad has lived in 10 different cities, in 8 different states, and in 4 different countries since leaving his native Madras, India. His new LP Marbled out February 9th tells the story of his journey. His journey doesn’t sound unfamiliar to others who immigrated to the US. In fact, it sounds a lot like many of my international friends and colleagues I went to school with. Part of Abhi’s journey was being denied another visa after college due to immigration laws. Abhi was torn from his job, girlfriend, and friends and forced back to India due to this hitch in the road. He quickly relocated to France and was able to come back to the US thanks to acceptance into a graduate program. Though frustrating and isolating, Abhi has always had music to turn to throughout these tumultuous times and Marbled is a product of that. READ MORE…

MIXTAPE: R. FINN’S TRAIN SONGS
I find the place I most enjoy listening to music is on the open road. Something about the peacefulness and repetition of it allows my mind to be most receptive to inspiration. This makes me tend to gravitate toward songs that have a certain motion to them. Songs to get you from point A to B. Songs you can get lost to, and with. Of all the “travel songs,” train songs seem to usually be the best … with, perhaps, honorable mention to horseback. But for our purposes, let’s go with trains! — R. Finn
Jimmie Rodgers — “Waiting for a Train”
Of course, you can’t have a playlist about trains without mention of “The Singing Brakeman” himself! Perhaps the first rock star, and rightfully so, Jimmie is the complete package. His guitar playing is deceptive. On the surface simple, but elegant and deep. His voice is always the perfect highway companion, and his lyrics worth the price of admission alone. Hard-hitting lyrics, nothing spared. Organized with poetic precision. He makes sleeping in a boxcar and the hobo’s life sound ideal. He could be singing about dying from T.B. and it feels like chicken soup. Jimmie is the greatest, and this one of his best.
Muddy Waters — “All Aboard”
McKinley Morganfield, “King of the Delta Blues.” I love everything he ever did, but this era is my favorite. From the opening harmonica choo choo and the “All Aboard” call, I’m already in. Don’t know where this train is going, but I’ve bought a one-way ticket. Underneath that intoxicating rhythm is a tale of a “mean old Frisco” taking Muddy’s baby away. Must have been some kind of woman.

Sir Canyon Announces ‘Ventura Skies,’ Premieres “Golden Days”
LA-based songwriter Sir Canyon (Noah Lamberth), who previously played pedal steel with Katy Perry and shared stages with Willie, Dierks, Brad Paisley, and more, is gearing up for the release of his new project, Ventura Skies, on March 2nd.
Ventura Skies is an unexpected return from a songwriter who just a few years ago thought he might never make another album again, but a romantic breakup and the death of his father to cancer coaxed music out of Lamberth as he dealt with loss & hurt.“The best way to deal with the pain is to verbalize it. But for me that comes out in song. It’s kind of like therapy. The songs started pouring out of me.”
A cinematic album, Ventura Skies, transports the listener to the spacious landscapes of Southern California, inspired both by the location where the album was recorded as well as artists such as Glen Campbell, The Beach Boys, Gram Parsons, and Buck Owens.
Today, Sir Canyon shares one of the album’s tracks, “Golden Days,” which Lamberth says he began thirteen years ago with the intro/riff and some of the chords, and never finished until right before it was recorded last year, noting, “It’s funny how those old ideas can still work if you’re willing to give them another chance.”
A moody, contemplative folk-rock track drenched in reverb, pedal steel, and echoing baritone guitars, “Golden Days” merges the feel of a western with a lush, layered sonic landscape that nods to the past while being undeniably original – something Lamberth intended. “Believe it or not the intro/riff for Golden Days is very Radiohead influenced. The riff is the first thing I wrote for the song and it’s probably my attempt at trying to write something that sounds like them. I wanted the rest of song to be kind of like a Glen Campbell song, with strings, Tele’s, and lush background vocals. Not sure if we were successful or not but we’re really happy with how the song turned out!”
