Bust Premieres New Song from Karen and the Sorrows

You know that almost-but-never relationship you had (or have, bless your heart) that kept you coming back for more as it unraveled your sanity (and, in my case, elicited a nine-month stream of subtweets)? So do Brooklyn-based “queer country trailblazers” Karen & the Sorrows, and their single “I Was Just Your Fool” from their upcoming album, The Narrow Place (out August 25th), will have you swaying back and forth in solidarity with that heart-wrenching feeling.

The sound aligns with old-school country but incorporates an alternative undercurrent that boosts the hipness. Drummer Tami Johnson keeps the beat as singer-songwriter Karen Pittelman narrates the heartbreak with a sweetly sad Dolly Parton-esque voice and Elana Redfield backs it up with “lonesome pedal steel guitar.” Don’t know what pedal steel guitar is? Neither did I, but I knew it when I heard it because I felt it’s haunting electricity. (For this album, the group enlisted bassist Gerard Kouwenhoven to accompany their soulful vibes.)

Heartbreak and loss are recurring themes that weave The Sorrows’ new album, The Narrow Place, together. And even if country music isn’t your scene, you’ll be undoubtedly moved by their modern-yet-classic auditory aesthetic and socially-progressive inclusivity with songs ranging from a “queer reimagining of the bro-country pickup truck ode to a Jewish family story about immigration and race.”

Glide Magazine reviews Bern Kelly’s album Lost Films

The obvious question that comes to mind on first exposure to Nashville singer/songwriter Bern Kelly and his excellent new album is, “Who is this guy and how has he managed to elude wider recognition. In simple, straightforward terms, suffice it to say that Lost Films is the kind of album that qualifies as an instant classic — not because it bends the boundaries but rather, because it encapsulates what’s within those parameters and effectively brings that music to the fore. NYLON calls Hayley Thompson-King’s “Teratoma” “The Rock Song of the Summer”

Singer-songwriter Hayley Thompson-King was known for being a curious child, and it’s a characteristic which has stayed with her throughout the years, growing to a fever pitch in her catchy new single, “Teratoma.” The fuzzy garage-rock track encourages listeners to not only question but also dismantle the idea of false idols, and today, NYLON is premiering the new single.  READ MORE…

The Bluegrass Situation premieres Fairbanks & the Lonesome Light’s new single “Pieces”

“‘Pieces’ is one of those songs that kind of wrote itself in a very short amount of time. I was just at the beginning of my decision to try and steer away from drinking and was wrestling with the two versions of my drinking reality: The romanticized freedom and beautiful chaos that was undoubtedly real, on one hand, and the terrifying ugliness and fairly un-poetic destruction that was becoming undeniable, on the other. American Standard Time reviews and streams Nathan Bell’s LOVE>FEAR (48 Hours in Traitorland)

I had listened through Nathan Bell‘s latest album at least twice before I realized he was entirely by himself on the record. The eleven hardscrabble tales were so captivating that I didn’t notice. Bell’s got a gravelly southern drawl. He fingerpicks the guitar quietly, and occasionally blows harp to accent the stories he tells about American people. Blue collar people, like Shelly, the obese large animal vet in married to Dale, a skinny patent attorney who quit to become a rodeo clown. When Dale gets injured doctors realize he’s a she, and wouldn’t you know, “Shelly didn’t seem to mind”. READ MORE…

Noisey Shares New Video from Karen and the Sorrows

Brooklyn-based country band Karen & the Sorrows are exactly what country music needs right now. Karen Pittelman, Elana Redfield, and Tami Johnson formed in 2011 and since have become a pillar in the local queer country music scene, continuing the work bands like Lavender Country began in the 70s. Their songs use traditional country tropes—love, loss, heartbreak, shame—but sung from the queer perspective. On paper, it doesn’t seem like that big of a deal; a lot of the music we love these days is made by queer people. In country music, though, bigoted values and an outright phobic industry means that even one slight deviation from the norm can lead to one helluva world of pain.

That’s why bands like Karen & the Sorrows, or My Gay Banjo, Yva Las Vegass, DK & the Joy Machine and so many more that make up this community are so special. They sing about the ups and downs (and because this is country music after all, mostly just the downs) of life and love in just the same way you or I would, but when they come together, like they did at Another Country Festival, the result is so fucking radical it’s hard to wipe the smile off your face for even a moment. I caught them at that performance and in case you couldn’t tell, I’m still high off the feeling of watching tons of queer country artists play music in resistance to a holiday that felt extra fucked up this year.
