See what No Depression has to say about the forthcoming effort from Matthew Check, The November Album (out 11/5)…
Matthew Check, the self-described “jewgrass” artist, has turned in an excellent run of albums in the past few years, both solo and as a part of Joanie and Matt. The album is an “old becomes new” experience for Check. Recorded in 2013 in the midst of a bad breakup and a worse addiction problem, Check shelved the songs until 2021 when, sober and happier, he revisited them while on pandemic pause and decided they deserved to be released.

Americana UK debuts William Russell Wallace’s new single, “Fire Season,” calling it “raw and dirty … some fine saviour of rock and roll stylings.”
William Russell Wallace is a rock and roll story teller in the tradition of Tom Waits or Tom Petty. His latest release is ‘Confidence Man‘ which is something of a concept album dealing as it does with the lives of those living on society’s edges – painting word images of their deeds and delving into their inner motivations. And all that’s attached to some fine saviour of rock and roll stylings – raw and dirty when it’s needed. On ‘Fire Season’ we have a protagonist who is always looking for the way out “there’s something beautiful about making an escape – and making it look easy every time.”
For Folk’s Sake debut’s song, “Sometimes a Woman,” describing how “Check’s soulful vocals yearn on the ballad as piano, as well as acoustic guitar, percussion, and harmonica, make for a cool, folksy backdrop.”
Mathew Check is as much an everyman as he is a chameleon. Throughout his long-standing career, the singer-songwriter has slipped into bluegrass clothes and Americana duds; he’s written Jewish music, children’s music, and music for just about anyone. You might know him from his recently lauded duo project, Joanie & Matt too. What makes Check’s portfolio so impressive isn’t quite so much its diversity, nor its quantity, but how he tackles each project with the same heart on his sleeve. Case in point: ‘Sometimes a Woman’, the latest tune released from his upcoming solo work, The November Album.
