Athens, Georgia’s Grand Vapids are a throwback to indie rock’s not-so-distant past. I hear multiple musical scenes in the corners of their songs, from mid-career Wilco to Elephant 6 band Beulah to Built to Spill to Kurt Vile. If you’ve kept up with guitar music over the last decade or two, you’ll likely find something to enjoy within Grand Vapids’ music. And if you’ve made the transition from going to school to working for a living (so most of us here, I’d say), then you’ll probably relate to Grand Vapids’ “Losing,” which Flavorwire is pleased to premiere below. CraveOnline Music interviews The Wans at Austin City Limits Music Festival (ACL) about CMJ Fest, SXSW & ebola

Before the festivities here in Texas wind down completely, as Austin City Limits 2014 draws to a close, CraveOnline’s Johnny Firecloud speaks with Nashville rockers The Wans.

Going forward, from ACL 2014 and beyond, the group is looking to build momentum among the music-loving community, going from festival to festival to share their tunes with as many folks as possible. In fact, The Wans is planning to perform at South by Southwest next year, and is really excited about the opportunity. “We’re still waiting on details, but we’re hoping to be back here in March for that,” one of the band members said.

But what about the road ahead, once SXSW 2015 is a thing of the past? After their upcoming bout of touring is done, they plan to get back to writing so they can start putting together their next album. The goal is to have a new record out by next year, which will undoubtedly please fans hungry for more of their rockin’ music.

Impose interviews ZONERS frontman Matt McCalvin and premieres the band’s badass new video for “X2 VISION”

From Atlanta, Georgia; Matt McCalvin of Gringo Star, Mermaids, and Dinos Boys has been rampaging with friends about the ATL with his new band, Zoners, who debut their dizzying video for “X2 Vision”. Found off their 7” split with fellow friendly locals Onchi, and to be featured on the upcoming album, Chill ‘Em All for their own Destroy Music imprint; McCalvin and friends cause a ruckus in the following visual episode that rages about like the most one of the insane gatherings imaginable; where a spirited anarchy breaks out as if all the authority figures just left town.

On the premiere of Zoners’ “X2 Vision” video from Dasher’s Kelly Stroup and Max Siciliano, a tube television is smashed up as the band throws a yard party with their friends. Fun with air-soft guns, early Halloween masks, fireworks, flags, sparklers, skateboards sends out seizure inducing visions of what looks like a three month Fourth of July bender amongst an excited group of friends. Zoners take their ‘Kill Your Television’ type of rage, and drop you into a zone of seeing double, where you can only begin to wonder what their neighbors are making of the rapid thrashing guitar histrionics, amongst mixing Budweisers and crossbows. In a video made to match the relentless energy of the band, Zoners present a primer of everything you should not do at home, or at friends houses, keeping super charged frenetic pace pumping. “X2 Vision” itself was recorded with the rage of a live Zoners performance while the video presents the wildest, privy, and impromptu performance piece that feels like the craziest backyard/frontyard/house party right before the cops break it up. Speakers in Code play Willie and the Giant’s new single “Ain’t Gonna Wait” for their Jam of the Day

Your week has been missing a shot of good old fashioned soul music, hasn’t it? Just be honest with yourself. It has. That’s why you’re about to be crazy about Nashville’s Willie & the Giant and their debut single “Ain’t Gonna Wait”, which is lush with horns and smooth guitars, set off by frontman Will Stewart’s vocals which never quite seem to fit against the music, in a staggered and staccato pattern that absolutely works for the chorus, where Stewart pleads that he ain’t gonna wait no more. The vocals hurry over the horns, the horns push against the guitars and the organ, the whole song tilts forward a little bit like a drunk, but it all ends with a perfect chord and a perfect fade out. Gringo Star’s dreamy, washed-out new video for “World of Spin” finds the band playing a hurricane party. Check it out exclusively at CMJ

The world’s a party in Gringo Star’s new video for World Of Spin. Though news reports threaten the apocalypse, the grainy footage shows the band playing live at house parties and backyard bbqs, causing everyone within hearing range to drop their doomsday prepping and start shaking a leg. Add to that the fact that the song itself is a doo-wop-indebted surf jingle swelling with harmonies, and you’ve got the perfect distraction cocktail that’ll take your mind off anything.

World Of Spin will appear on Gringo Star’s upcoming 7-inch, which will be the debut release of Grand Rapids, MI label dizzybird records. Brian Hoekstra, who co-founded the label with Nicole LaRae, said, “Working with Gringo Star has been on my mind since I met them at CMJ a few years ago. Gringo Star has a unique, adventurous psychedelic rock ‘n’ roll sound that’s infectious and timeless—these two sides could’ve come out at any point in the last 50 years. Pure Volume premieres The Killing Floor’s new single “Corruption Capital”

The Killing Floor have been hard at work this year recording their sophomore full-length, and though we won’t see the final result until early next year, the New-York-by-way-of-London alt-rock quartet is giving us a little taste of what to expect. Today, we’re excited to premiere the band’s first single off the upcoming album, “Corruption Capital.” Pulling from influences like Muse and the Foo Fighters, the track is a seamless blend of melody and gritty, political rock. “‘Corruption Capital’ was actually an idea that the band had knocking around for a while,” rhythm guitarist/background vocalist Oliver Alberici begins. “It started out life as a simple chord progression that I had but didn’t really know what to do with. That was until one well-oiled and rather foggy night in Marco’s basement. We were jamming at his studio space in Brooklyn, and he was on the drums. He played me that 6/8 beat which sounded great and I thought ‘Hello I might have something for that,’ played the chords and we both realised we we had the beginnings of a decent tune.

“The next day Mark was over and we excitedly played him our previous night’s discovery. He then picked up the bass as Marco was still hammering the kit and started with that driving bass rhythm. After a few more beers and a few more tweaks, we had the rough bones of the song down. Then for whatever reason we kinda left it for a while. It works like that sometimes. We always have a number of ideas floating around and when we feel the time is right, we’ll pick them out and work on them again. That point came probably a good year or so later. We had worked on a rough melody and lyrical idea in between but it wasn’t until we were writing and rehearsing at Stonehouse Studios in England, which is in an old converted barn in the Surrey countryside, that the song really came together. Pete hits his drums hard so straight away the beat sounded great and we were all cooking. That’s when Mark came up with that guitar riff over the chorus, which really took it to eleven! LISTEN HERE…
