It’s impossible to limit Norwegian musician Hanne Hukkelberg to any particular musical world; as a teenager she sang for the metal band Funeral, before graduating from a music academy in Oslo and embarking on a career that has touched on jazz, electronic, and pop music. Along the way she has picked up a Norwegian Grammy and plenty of acclaim for her sophisticated, savvy approach that often includes found sounds alongside more traditional elements.
Birthmark finds Hukkelberg in her experimental pop mode, writing songs that touch on the impersonality of modern interactions (on the song “Don’t Dream” she plans to “fiddle while Twitter burns”), the lessons she would impart on her younger self, and a bleak, imagined future for her relationship, which sadly proved true.

God is in the TV features Hanne Hukkelberg on Tracks of the Week #82 with “The Young and Bold I”
Who? Hanne Hukkelberg
Where? Norway
What? โThe Young and Bold Iโ
What they say? Norwegian experimental pop artist Hanne continues to utilise her collagist method of structuring songs, with further integration of found instruments. โI wanted the lyrics and my voice to stand out the most. I needed something to lift up the vocals and the lyrics, and I wanted to challenge myself. I think itโs a richer process if I write the lyrics and write the songs, and produce the record at the same time. Itโs a tiny bit chaotic, but incredibly rewarding,โ says Hukkelberg.
Why we love it? Inventive pop built on harmonic layers and catchy refrains. Skittering and pattering beats and beat boxing are threaded with an ingenious palette of pianos and guitars. Marvellously addictive.

Slingshot: 10 Nashville Artists To Add To Your Playlists
People still imagine a sea of cowboy boots and hats when they think of Nashville, but it’s so much more than that when it comes to our rich and diverse community of music creators. WMOT has recently launched a three-prong series to focus on local emerging artists. The Local Brew includes The Daily Local Brew, which highlights a different local artist every Monday through Friday. There’s also The Local Brew Show, a weekly long-form show including an interview, plus a weekly showcase, The Local Brew Live.
Narrowing this list down to just ten Nashville based artists was no easy task. This list includes a taste of some of the different sounds coming out of Nashville; there’s definitely some twang, but also some soul, rock and roll and even a little bit of jazz. All of these artists have been, or are about to be featured on The Local Brew.
