Brad Byrd Releases “That Great Feeling” Video On American Songwriter

Earlier this year, singer-songwriter Brad Byrd released the track “That Great Feeling,” a single off his forthcoming album Phases. Now Byrd has shared an official video for the track, premiering below.

Byrd and director Alfredo Vidal shot the scenic video in the small city of Big Bear Lake, CA. As Byrd describes it, the video seeks to capture the track’s “loose and lyrical narrative about being trapped and haunted by memories of idyllic times, while also being consumed by a loss of love and the frustration that goes with it.”

American Songwriter Premieres Jennah Bell’s new single, “Another Louisiana”

One of the more exciting roots releases slated for 2019 is Jennah Bell’s full-length debut Anchors And Elephants, due out February 22. The Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter explores her folk, soul, indie and R&B roots across the LP, using her kaleidoscopic influences to chronicle love, heartbreak, identity and personal growth with precision and dimension. Bell recorded Anchors And Elephants with producer James Poyser, a member of the Roots who is also known for his work with Erykah Badu and Lauryn Hill, among other artists.

Ahead of Anchors And Elephants‘ release, Bell has shared the striking new song “Another Louisiana.” The emotional track, which features co-production and charango from Michael Haziza, is built atop Bell’s ethereal guitar playing, which chimes and swirls beneath her vulnerable vocal. Lyrically, “Another Louisiana” recalls the rawness of Julien Baker and the imagery of Laura Marling, with Bell confronting personal demons and past relationships with unflinching clarity. READ MORE

American Songwriter Premieres Ross Cooper’s New Video For “I Rode The Wild Horses”

Ross Cooper
Ross Cooper

A lot of country and Americana artists like to write tunes about riding and wrangling, but only a handful of them have actually done it. Ross Cooper, who just released the aptly titled album I Rode The Wild Horses, is one of those artists, as he had a career as a professional bareback rider before trying his hand at music.

In a new video for the album’s title track, Cooper offers a glimpse of the rodeo life, from loading up the trailer the night before to hanging on for dear life atop a bucking horse. Cooper shot the video at the Texas Cowboy Reunion Arena, the Swenson Ranch, the Mallet Event Center, and Lubbock, Texas bar the Blue Light.

“I’m a second generation cowboy,” Cooper says. “Both of my folks used to rodeo, and my brother and I grew up riding bucking horses (saddle-bronc and bareback). That’s how we were raised. I was brought up in and around rodeo arenas. So when I sat down to write this song, it didn’t take a whole lot of time. I know the characters and could see the story.”

Eric Masse produced I Rode The Wild Horses, and the album features contributions from Erin Rae, Steelism’s Jeremy Fetzer, Eli Beard, Tommy Perkinson, Skylar Wilson, and Eddy Dunlap.

Kellen Of Troy Premieres New Track “When You Don’t Hear Goodbye”

Kellen of Troy

Breakups are never easy. They’re especially tough pills to swallow, though, when you don’t know where things went wrong. Nashville-based act Kellen of Troy (the project of musician Kellen Wenrich) explores that unique brand of heartbreak on a new track, “When You Don’t Hear Goodbye.”

Off Wenrich’s forthcoming solo debut Posthumous Release, “When You Don’t Hear Goodbye” is a hardscrabble honky-tonk ballad inspired, in part, by an actual recent breakup. “I wrote this tune shortly after getting out of a bad relationship and was relieved to be on the other side of it,” he says. “I wanted a different perspective for the record, however, so I feigned the heartbreak and came up with ‘When You Don’t Hear Goodbye.’”

Wenrich, who once played in the now-defunct Apache Relay, counts among his influences Neil Young, John Prine, and “saloon pianos in Western movies.” Postumous Release follow’s Wenrich’s acclaimed 2016 EP Sad Bastard.

Posthumous Release is out February 16.
