The Deli Magazine premieres Beechwood’s new psych-pop single, “Boy Before”

 

Beechwood’s specialty is classic garage rock with a psych tinge. Sometimes it’s in-your-face, loud and proud punk, sometimes it’s syrupy indie pop, but the New York trio pretty much has their thing figured out. The group’s newest single, “Boy Before,” hits closer to the later with a glam rock guitar riff introducing a Jesus and Mary Chain-esque haze. Guitarist/vocalist Gordon Lawrence in particular shines on the track with an almost sleazily enticing, half-murmured vocal delivery. The track comes in advance of Inside The Flesh Hotel (preorder it here), out June 8 on Alive Records, and a string of European tour dates. Take a listen to “Boy Before” below. Beechwood’s newest single, “Nero,” is a fuzzy, unhinged instrumental track that is both gritty and captivating. Gordon Lawrence’s intermittent shrieks can be heard towards the back of mix, while the dirty tone of the guitar and drums take over. Bandsintown premieres “Bigot in my Bedroom” by Beechwood

One quick scroll through social media this week (cc: every week), and it’s clear—politics are absolutely unavoidable. NYC-based trio, Beechwood, who generally tackle rock’n’roll-friendly topics, added their two cents today with the release of their latest track, “Bigot in My Bedroom”.

“Look what you’ve done to this nation, you got us tangled up in all of your lies,” sings bassist and songwriter, Sid Simons, as Isa Tineo (drums/vox) and Gordon Lawrence (guitar/vox) chime in with spirited coos and handclaps. While semi-heavy in its messaging, the song itself is an upbeat masterpiece—one that deserves to be belted out with friends at a drive bar (friends who’re also navigating the political landscape that is 2018).

Of the song, Simons and Lawrence told us, “Though we don’t consider ourselves to be a political band, it’s impossible these days to avoid the constant stream of the 24-hour bullshit media news cycle. This comes in many forms, and it is therefore a part of our everyday life—advertisements of crooked, smiling politicians, waving their arms in the air and coming at you from every direction.” He continued, saying, “Bigots in the bedroom, Nazis in the kitchen…’well what can a poor boy do’?”

The guys will be performing their new material on their upcoming European tour, which kicks off on May 25 in Paris.

Punknews.org premieres Beechwood’s new music video for “This Time Around”

Today, Punknews is pleased to debut the new video by Beechwood!

Built around a cold wave of shimmering guitars and wails, “This Time Around” pulls from the sinister aesthetic of first wave goth and the mid-70s nihilism of Bowie and Lou Reed in equal measures. Fittingly, images of war and chaos are layered on top of these nasty vibes, suggesting that the terror of the past may very well be right around the corner.

Speaking to Punknews, the band’s Gordon Lawrence said, “There is a certain driving force or intensity in “This Time Around” that (in my mind) is met with images of conquering armies, cities burning, a sort of Wagnerian Götterdämmerung. We even recorded ourselves in combat boots marching in place on a tiled floor to enhance the effect in the song. It’s claustrophobic, paranoid, destructive, but also– in a way it’s therapeutic. There is a certain freedom in the knowledge that any day it can all be over. The use of historical/pop-culture references illustrates this sense of impending doom. I have no doubt that humanity will one day do itself in for good, and what more damning evidence does one need than our own recent history?”

New Noise Magazine premieres Beechwood’s single, “I Know It’s Not Right”

“‘I Know It’s Not Right’ was done at a separate recording session about 7 or 8 months before the rest of the album was recorded. It was actually just myself alone with my producer, Matthew Marquardt. I wrote and recorded that song at a very difficult time in my life where it seemed like my whole world was completely falling apart. I was extremely unhealthy and put my body through a hell that I don’t wish upon anyone. It’s an extremely personal song of mine that was not originally intended for the public, but we needed a bonus track for the CD, and my friends pushed me to put it out and I’m happy now that the song is getting a proper release.

I can’t say what exactly influenced the arrangement on the song other than the fact that I just followed and trusted the instincts of my producer Matthew and myself. The instrumentation on any given song is dictated by the emotions that are let out through the song, and it’s our job to act as mediums for when the inspiration hits. Where that comes from I cannot say, but it’s there.”
