Folk duo The Handsome Family, whose song “Far from Any Road” soundtracked the main theme for season one of True Detective, are back with a new album, Hollow. It’s their eleventh LP, the follow up to 2016’s Unseen, and it’s due out on September 8. “We’re astonished to be breathing,” Rennie Sparks says, “let alone still be inspired to write songs and sing together. There’s been a lot of smashed coffee cups in our house over the years, but we’re still unable to resist the urge to make music.” She wrote all the lyrics on the album, and her husband Brett Sparks wrote and recorded all the music, and played most of the instruments. Dave Trumfio mastered, and you can see the tracklist below.

Brooklyn Vegan features Dessa’s new single “Tyranny” ahead of U.S. election
“Working as an indie artist, you get a lot of freedom,” Dessa says, along with the release of this fired-up, political new song. “You can follow your ideas as far as your imagination will take you, set the parameters of your style, insist on your own aesthetic. Politics, on the other hand, is full of rugged pragmatism–lots of uncomfortable compromises and unappetizing calculations. This election doesn’t provide a perfect presidential candidate, but the choice between them is perfectly clear. Donald Trump has undermined scientific institutions, hampered public discourse with name-calling and deliberate lies, and he has stoked the sort of fear and anger that encourages Americans to understand one another as enemies, instead of fellow citizens. I am excited to cast a vote that will remove Donald Trump from office, moving this country in a direction that values reason, scientific evidence, compassion, and tolerance.” READ MORE…
BrooklynVegan premieres the new Honus Honus’ single, “The Stripper Has No Navel”
Man Man have been pretty quiet for a while now, but frontman Honus Honus is now doing the solo thing and releasing Use Your Delusion later this month which he funded with a via PledgeMusic. We’ve got the premiere of “The Stripper Has No Navel,” which basically picks up where Man Man left off. Like in that band, Honus Honus is making impossible-to-pigeonhole weirdo rock songs that rarely sound much like anyone else. You can kinda dance to this one, and it’s pretty damn catchy, but don’t expect AltNation to start giving it regular play. READ MORE…

Brooklyn Vegan: Hermano offshoot Luna Sol releasing ‘Blood Moon’ ft. mems of Kyuss
David Angstrom, guitarist of one of Kyuss singer John Garcia’s post-Kyuss bands, Hermano, recently started a new project called Luna Sol. The self-described “High Mountain Stoner Rock” band are releasing their debut album, Blood Moon, on — you guessed it — 4/20, and it features contributions from John Garcia, as well as John’s former bandmate Nick Oliveri. The album is being released by, and up for pre-order at Slush Fund Recordings.
David’s lineup is rounded out by drummer Pat Gill (The Feds, ’76 Pinto), guitarist and vocalist Shanda Kolberg (The Swanks), and bassist/vocalist Shannon Fahnestock (The Swindlers). We’ve got the premiere of new single “Standley Lake,” and this one doesn’t feature any of the Kyuss guys, but it certainly sounds like the work of somebody who spent over a decade in a band with one. Rip your bong (I mean, if you’re in a place where it’s legal obviously, like Colorado where Luna Sol are from) and listen to the new song below.
The band’s only upcoming date the moment is a hometown show on April 16 at the… HiDive (sorry). LISTEN HERE…
