New single “The Hellhounds” from singer/songwriter Deep Gold premieres at Glide Magazine

Deep Gold’s is an instantly identifiable voice. The Maine-based singer-songwriter is a dark and sultry crooner, quietly grinding the vocal gears a la Leonard Cohen on “Everybody Knows” or Bob Dylan circa Time Out of Mind. There’s a gravelly, slow-burning richness to his delivery that can mesmerize with a howl or a whisper, not to mention a subtle, fatalistic wisdom well beyond the enigmatic twentysomething’s years.

The name Deep Gold means many things to its creator. It’s the color of the guitar he plays, a Gibson Les Paul Gold Top. It reflects the honeyed tone of his voice, and also hints at something precious that’s been unearthed, like gold from a mine, a once-buried nugget of truth or beauty now revealed in song. It also invokes his publishing company, The Golden Door, an image taken from the inscription at foot of the Statue of Liberty. READ MORE…

Glide Magazine premieres Simon Patrick Kerr’s stripped-down single “Strung Out Again”

Simon Patrick Kerr has made a name for himself as the frontman for blistering Nashville power trio The Wans, whose brand of 60’s psych rock has landed them on bills alongside Queens of the Stone Age, Jack White, Pearl Jam and more. But Kerr isn’t the kind of artist to be filed neatly into a box. On his forthcoming solo LP, Doldrums (out July 20), Kerr returns to a more stripped-down approach to his songwriting, crafting intensely personal Americana and indie-folk songs inspired by Nashville-outsider heroes like Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark, while chronicling one of the more tumultuous periods in his life.

Kerr’s acoustic shift on Doldrums may come as a surprise to longtime fans of The Wans, but for Kerr it was a logical step. “I played in The Wans for six years and we were touring pretty heavily the last four,” he says. “In between tours I was writing songs that didn’t really fit the mold of the band—they were less party friendly, definitely more on the folkie side. On our last tour in 2017, I asked [Wans drummer] Mark [Petaccia] if I could come in and record a few songs at his studio, and it ended up becoming a full record.” Of this more bare-bones approach to writing and recording, Kerr says, “I never want to get to the point of being comfortable as a songwriter. So I wanted this album to be as vulnerable as possible.” READ MORE…

Glide Magazine Shares New Single From Kate Vargas

Kate Vargas

“A stunning track that showcases a raspy and charismatic voice that is seriously in the pocket. Vargas reflects artists like Tom Waits, Kat Edmonson, M. Ward and PJ Harvey that hone a vintage pop sound that summons a golden era when music was real and alternatively hip.”

Glide Magazine gives John Calvin Abney’s new LP Coyote 7 out of 10 stars

john calvin abney coyote

If you caught John Moreland on tour any time in 2017, you were treated to a mind-blowing performance from his sideman and sole bandmate, John Calvin Abney. The fellow Oklahoman is a multi-instrumentalist and managed to keep up with the notoriously brisk pace of Moreland’s setlist, switching guitars and jumping on harmonica at lightning speed. It was a performance that likely left many wondering, who the heck is that guy? And it served as an intriguing introduction to Abney’s new solo record, Coyote.

The songs on Coyote are the result of a lot of personal hardship for Abney, and the grounded, serene nature of his soft harmonies feels like the anecdote. Facing down loss, heartbreak, and a major transitional time in his life, Abney creates a driving progression in the melodies of his songs, like an innate need to keep moving forward no matter what. “Always Enough” finds comfort in a simple, stripped down acoustic guitar and piano arrangement with Elliott Smith-like vocals as Abney reflects on the demise of a relationship. Glide Magazine premieres Beechwood’s new single, “Our Love Was Worth the Heartbreak”

From two-minute pop perfection, to the sound of drug-induced nightmare psychoses, Beechwood’s music hits you where it hurts. The NYC-based trio consists of Gordon Lawrence (guitar/vox), Isa Tineo (drums/vox) and Sid Simons (bass/vox), all of whom draw their rock n’roll line in the dirt and ask the world, which side are you on?

On June 8 the band will release their new album Inside the Flesh Hotel on Alive Naturalsound Records (Iggy Pop & James Williamson, The Black Keys) and will celebrate with a European tour. The album is the follow-up to the recently released Songs From the Land of Nod LP, which garnered enthusiastic reviews across the board. This time around the band went for stronger production and catchier sing-a-longs. They mix garage, psych, and glam rock into a sound that is at once a throwback to a golden period of rock and roll as well as a sign of hope in a time when we see less and less guitar bands and true rock. It’s no surprise that they have drawn comparisons from an eclectic range of acts, from The Handsome Family and Conor Oberst, to the Rolling Stones and Jim O’Rourke.

Today Glide is excited to premiereBeechwood’s newest single, “Our Love Was Worth The Heartbreak”, an anthemic love song and a medley of indie-folk and Americana, with a touch of Nicky Hopkins-inspired piano. The band gets romantic, hanging on simpler, more tactile memories. Alas, youth is an alibi, and Gordon Lawrence pleads his case, singing “Our love was worth the heartbreak that came later / Now time keeps moving fast, but my boots ain’t built to last / Our love was worth the heartbreak that came later.” The song is less of a charged up rocker and more of a commiserating folk rocker with a loose, whiskey-passing vibe, making it one of the more fun tunes on the album.  READ MORE…

GospelbeacH share new single “Change of Heart” at Glide Magazine

gospelbeach beachwood sparks rademaker change of heart dreamin california fantasy

The lineage of kaleidoscopic California folk-rock could hardly have meandered into better hands than those of GospelbeacH, the all-star quintet whose members boast resumés longer than a hippie’s hair. At the center of the spinning wheel is singer-guitarist Brent Rademaker (Beachwood Sparks, the Tyde, Further). While Rademaker is the unchanging core, various lineups of the band have included his former Beachwood Sparks bandmate and drummer Tom Sanford, guitarist Neal Casal (Ryan Adams and the Cardinals, the Chris Robinson Brotherhood, Furthur), guitarist Jason Soda (Everest, Watson Twins) and bassist Kip Boardman (Watson Twins).

Last summer GospelbeacH continued to deftly honor the grand tradition of West Coast rock and roll with their second album Another Summer of Love. This time around it was more 70’s FM rock than 60’s AM gold, more cosmo than country with a theme of timeless love delivered through straightforward, inviting songwriting and singing by Rademaker.

Warm classic production and tight harmonies are helmed once again by guitarist/vocalist Jason Soda. Recorded in Los Angeles at Palomino Sound, Jason’s new 1970’s vintage artisan recording studio. Third GospelbeacH core member Jonny Niemanns adds cascading piano, organ and mellotron fill out the album’s rich sound. READ MORE…
