The lead single and track from the beloved alt-country duo’s new album, Hollow, was inspired by a dream. Indeed, Brett Sparks’ evocative solo – one of Joseph’s highlights – has a dream-like quality, with a beautiful melodic arc.
Guitar World
Guitar World interviews neo-funk producer and multi-instrumentalist, FAREES, and guitarist Leo Nocentelli of legendary funk pioneers, The Meters, about their recent collaboration and profound love for Jimi Hendrix.
There are, of course, ample doses of guitar goodness throughout, most notably on a trippy cover of Jimi Hendrix’s Hey Joe, which sees Farees laying down fierce, wah-soaked rhythms before heading to the outer limits with a turbo-charged solo. And on the widescreen funk masterpiece The Melting, he’s joined by Meters guitar legend Leo Nocentelli, who joyously weaves a colorful quilt of intricate six-string textures.
The Jamie McLean Band Premieres New Album, ‘One and Only’
Between his time as a guitarist for New Orleans’ legendary Aaron Neville and Dirty Dozen Brass Band, and his time with his solo band—who have shared the stage with Gregg Allman, Dr. John, Taj Mahal, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Trombone Shorty, Los Lobos and Govt. Mule, to name a few—Jamie McLean has soaked up quite a bit of America’s musical DNA. This experience is obvious in his new album with the Jamie McLean Band, One and Only, which is streaming now on GuitarWorld.com.
The soulful, self-assured LP was produced by Wilco’s Ken Coomer at the Sound Emporium in Nashville and features contributions from Sam Bush and Jeff Coffin of the Dave Matthews Band.
McLean provides a fascinating cross-section of sounds on One and Only. His songs merge the yearning and romanticism of Tom Petty, the air-tight instrumental proficiency of Nashville and the rugged independent streak of alt-country. You can hear the whole wonderful cocktail below.
McLean and his band—which also features Brian Griffin on drums and Ben Mars on bass—are currently on the road to support One and Only.
Guitar World Premieres ‘Little Devil’ From Derek Hoke
Today, GuitarWorld.com presents the exclusive premiere of “Little Devil,” a stark yet sticky new track by East Nashville-based singer-songwriter-guitarist Derek Hoke. The song is from Hoke’s new album, Bring the Flood, which will be released October 9 via Little Hollywood.
In its own plaintive, reverb-drenched way, the album (and “Little Devil”) is indicative of the exciting new sound coming out of the greater Nashville area in late 2017—a sound that’s not quite country, not quite rock, not quite blues, surf or acid jazz—yet full of pith and delicious retro references.
“‘Little Devil’ follows the very long musical tradition of writing about a girl that’s nothing but trouble,” Hoke tells us. “There’s E.L.O.’s ‘Evil Woman,’ Marty Robbins’ ‘Devil Woman,’ etc. The list goes on.
“I had the melody and the chorus to the tune for a few weeks. Just hammering the same four notes out on my ’68 Tele over and over. I used a Prescription Electronics Yardbox to get the point across. Once I had the verses and chorus, my producer Dex Green and I started putting it all together. ‘Simple caveman drums’ was how I described the rhythm I wanted to hear. That’s how we got drummer Matt Chamberlain (Fiona Apple, the Wallflowers) involved. He played a killer straight beat that still swings hard. Dex brought on his friend Luther Dickinson (North Mississippi Allstars) for the solo and outro.
Guitar World premieres The Killing Floor’s new video for “Corruption Capital”
Today, GuitarWorld.com presents the exclusive premiere of “Corruption Capital,” the new video — and single — by the Killing Floor.
Hailing from both sides of the Atlantic, brothers Mark and Oliver Alberici and Marco Argiro and Peter Landi came together in 2009 after meeting at New York City’s Electric Lady Studios.
The Killing Floor released their debut self-titled album in 2011. They’ve toured extensively throughout the U.S., Canada and the U.K., showcasing at Download Fest, SXSW, CMJ, Indie Week Canada, CBGB Festival, Liverpool Sound City and the Great Escape. In June and July, TKF embarked on a European tour, which included stops in the U.K., France and Portugal.
However, much of 2014 was spent working on their upcoming album, from which “Corruption Capital” is drawn. Writing and recording began in London in February and March; that’s also where they shot “Corruption Capital” video, which you can check out below. Expect their new album to be released in early 2015. WATCH HERE…
