I’m buying all of the Charles Wesley Godwin stock available. Ever since I first heard Seneca, Godwin’s upcoming album, in the last weeks of 2018, I knew it was special. Godwin just seems primed to break out like Tyler Childers, Colter Wall, or Jason Isbell before him. So far, he’s shared a handful of songs off Seneca with the roaring ramble of “Hardwood Floors” being the latest. Godwin’s embrace of West Virginia (and Appalachia at large) sets the table. Right from the get-go, you’re given the setting for all these songs to live in. Go forth and explore. Godwin’s storytelling is rich and weighted with details of struggle, strife, and the fog of depression.
