The history of hip-hop cannot be written without delving into Detroit. Even without Eminem changing the game, you still have the likes of Slum Village, Obie Trice, Big Sean, Danny Brown, and Royce da 5’9″ making their mark. Kid Vishis, younger brother of Royce, has proven himself as one of Motown’s most potent MCs. READ MORE…

Jennah Bell premieres new video for “Can’t Be Too Careful” at The 405
Last month, L.A.-based indie-folk/soul/R&B artist, Jennah Bell dropped her new album Anchors and Elephants, featuring production from the likes of James Poyser of The Roots. The daughter of Ronnie Bell, a founding member of Kool and the Gang, Bell has used her influences and opportunities to create something that truly resonates. We’re thrilled to premiere the video for her track ‘Can’t Be Too Careful’. Below, Bell describes the creation and cinematic inspiration of the video, directed by her friend Mallory Talty and co-starring Jane Kim.
The 405 reviews Chase McBride’s ‘Lemonade’
Despite being among the most welcoming genres around, folk is intriguingly hard to get a precise bead on. That isn’t stopping L.A. singer songwriter Chase McBride from trying. Determined to hit that sweet spot, McBride is returning with his second full LP of 2018 alone. Following up February’s Green Shade, he’s grown inexorably closer to that elusive sweet spot with Pink Lemonade. READ MORE…
DONCAT’s new album Preservation of the Spirit streams in full at The 405
There is nothing wrong with experimentation, but there is also something special about an artist that manages to keep their sound consistent for years. Take San Francisco’s DONCAT, who has delivered golden waves on each of his previous two LPs; his brand new record, Preservation of the Spirit, channels the same energy with cooperative guitar melodies and nostalgic undertones. Listen to the release exclusively below.
A mustachioed Duncan Nielsen is the mind behind DONCAT, having begun the project about six years ago. His last full-length effort was called Easy Cowboy, which demonstrated a more pastoral take on his evocative style of indie rock. Preservation may be more succinct than its predecessor but the emotion it channels is arguably more potent, once again able to subtly reinvent his own sound without losing the attention of longtime fans and able to grab new ones too. The 405 premieres “Ocean Love” by DEGA
“Love will keep us together” was preached by Captain & Tennille (before being inverted by Ian Curtis), but being apart might have given husband-and-wife synth-pop duo Kalen and Aslyn Nash, aka DEGA, renewed romantic zest. Their new song ‘Ocean Love’ is a lush ballad, like Beach House, if they actually had a coastal focus. Inspired by their honeymoon to Jamaica, it connects love and longing for beatific paradise with that for your significant other. Aslyn’s voice shines proudly in her yearning against swirling synths and deep bass. It’s a song that will make you daydream about experiences you haven’t had, but feel incredibly personal nonetheless. READ MORE…

Moscow-based electro/pop group House of Morning Star share new single at The 405
If you’re in the Northern Hemisphere, you might be experiencing some frostiness right now (er, that is, in temperature terms). Here, in Ohio, it’s a very pleasant-feeling 14 degrees (Celsius). The forecast has that going down to -7 next Tuesday (that’s the high). So, I’m not putting my coat in storage anytime soon. Read more…
