Back before TikTok was turning teenagers into social media stars and causing international controversy, there was once upon a time a little app called Vine. A gem of a social media platform with a life that was tragically cut way too short, Vine’s legacy still lives on in the generation of creators it fostered. READ MORE…

PAPER Magazine Premieres Emergency Tiara’s “Do Not Disturb”
New York-based experimental pop artist Emergency Tiara has a sound that can only be described as a masterful mix of Japanese pop-rock, uptempo 60’s tunes, fast and fine rhythms that seem to be inspired by Tokyo, and straightforward lyrics. ET, who was born in Tokyo with the name Juri Jinnai, isn’t afraid of leaning into the strange and unique with her bubbly escapism. But make no mistake: she doesn’t hide behind all the color and theatrics. At the core of her music is authenticity, and the celebration of different people’s authentic selves.
Paper Magazine unveils dreamy new video from San Francisco’s DONCAT
San Francisco-based indie-rock singer Duncan Nielsen makes dreamy psych-pop as DONCAT. He grew up surrounded by horses and nature, and his upbringing clearly informs the earthy, laid-back nature of his work. These days, he writes and plays music primarily from his San Francisco home which overlooks much of the city. He says, “Sometimes I have a guitar in my hands but I’m not even playing. Like, I forget to play cause I’m just lost in my head and simultaneously staring at the view. I do get things done though, lots of demoing and writing up there.”
The video for “Once I Went To Las Vegas,” off DONCAT’s forthcoming album Preservation of the Spirit, is a 16 mm reverie. Nielsen’s face is superimposed on scenes of cityscapes, rippling water, and mountains. The instrumentals in the song are similarly calming. Nielsen’s voice weaves delicately through a wash of skittering drums and psychedelic guitar. The video’s gorgeous nature imagery is a perfect complement for the track, which is a sharp critique of materialism and daily social anxieties. Neilsen croons, “I’m smoking cigars in a cheap suit/eating foie gras in a restaurant, five stars/ are these my lucky cards?” asking us to unplug from the fast-paced world of social media and fancy restaurants for the quiet, necessary solitude of self-reflection.

Paper Magazine premieres DEGA’s new sunny video for “Ocean Love”
Husband and wife duo Aslyn and Kalen Nash make dreamy, jubilant synth pop as DEGA. Before collaborating together, the two had established music careers. Aslyn had released two records, Lemon Love and The Dandelion Sessions, and toured as a keyboardist and backup singer with Kesha. Kalen, whose band Ponderosa was signed to New West Records, had released two albums, Moonlight Revival and Pool Party, as well as a solo album called Ukred. In fact, it was the business of their career schedules that prompted them to collaborate so that they could see each other more often.
Their decision clearly paid off. The new Tropico Photo-directed video for their song “Ocean Love” is crisp, clean, and colorful, like if an IKEA catalogue was brought to life by Glossier’s creative team. Dominated by primary colors, the video creates a world of popped bubble gum, geometric dance moves, blue tights, and turtlenecks cut down the back. Back by the song’s gurgling, glittery synths and shimmying drums, the video feels sunny and uplifting.
Aslyn says of the video, “I am a classically trained pianist and I tend to move in a structured way. With DEGA, we would start something and it would move and change and find its own way. That is a lot of who Kalen is, both musically and personally. He’s an open and spontaneous person — that’s how he maneuvers through life.”
Kalen adds, “I love pop music and working with Aslyn has helped me embrace that. And knowing that she’s going to show up and kill it every time, in the studio and live, is one of the most pleasurable things to happen in my career.” READ MORE…
